Bogomila Welsh-Ovcharov, “Charles Pachter”, Toronto, 1992, page 94, plate 102 for another of the works from the artist’s “Davenport” series.
Referencing Charles Pachter’s “Davenport” series of works, Bogomila Welsh-Ovcharov writes: “The satirical puns of the titles notwithstanding, the ‘davenport’ paintings feature couches with wilderness backgrounds. In the principal work, ‘Davenport and Bay, 1984’, the viewer is confronted by a plump, flesh-toned Victorian sofa placed in front of sliding glass doors beyond which a cloudy sky surmounts a choppy lake, forming a painting within a painting. This formal work is sufficient to contemplate by itself without the viewer knowing that the title refers to two intersecting Toronto streets.”
