Norman Laliberté Biography
(1925)
Born in Worcester, MA, USA, of French-Canadian parents, he was raised in Montreal. He studied in the Worcester Museum in Massachusetts and the Institute of Design in Chicago (1947-48). He won a painting scholarship to the Cranbrook Academy, Bloomfield, MI. (1948-50), and received his MS degree in Art Education at the Institute of Design at the Illinois Institute of Technology (mid 50’s). He taught at the Kansas City Art Institute; St. Mary’s College in Notre Dame, Indiana and at the Rhode Island School of Design. He began making banners while a resident artist at St. Mary’s College in 1959 after having seen decorative banners at the Siena Festivals in Italy. From 1963-65 he was Design Consultant for the Vatican Pavilion, New York World’s Fair during which time he created and executed 88 large banners. In the spring of 1965 he held his first solo show in Canada at the Waddington Galleries, Montreal, of his drawings and banners, subsequently he exhibited at the Galerie Dresdnere, Toronto (1966); Robertson Galleries, Ottawa (1967); Gallery Moos, Montreal (1969) and elsewhere in the United States. He is author of nine books He lived in Ossining, New York.
