J.L. Graham Biography
(1873 - 1965)
Born in Belleville, Ontario, Graham studied at the Montreal Art Association under William Brymner (1890-1893); at l'Ecole des Arts et Manufactures, Montreal under Edmond Dyonnet; the Slade School of Art, London under Fred Brown and Henry Tonks (1896); at the Julian Academy in Paris under Jean-Paul Laurens; and at the Institut Superieur des Beaux-Arts in Antwerp under Julian de Vriend (1906-09). He also travelled and painted extensively in England (1904), The Netherlands, Belgium and France (1897-1910) when he returned to Canada, living briefly in Toronto and Ottawa before settling in Montreal in 1922 until his death. Working in oil, watercolour and pastel, he painted Quebec landscape and farm scenes with cows and horses and urban scenes in an Impressionist style.He taught painting at the l'Ecole des Beaux-Arts, Montreal (1896-1898).He exhibited at the AAM between 1891-1945 and RCA from 1893-1945. His work is represented at the AGO, MMFA, MQ and NGC.
