Born at Kensington, England, F.W. Jopling came to Canada in 1974 and settled in Toronto, Ontario. In 1877 he entered the Ontario Society of Artists art school and studied under Lucius O’Brien and John Fraser until 1878. In. 1880 he arrived in New York City where he studied at the Art Students’ League under Walter Shirlaw, William Sartain and William Chase, until 1883. He remained in New York City for thirty-two years where he worked as an advertising artist for railway and steamship companies and was also on the staff of the New York Herald. He sold his work as well, to “Harper’s Weekly and Colliers”. He later worked for several large photo engraving and printing houses in the United States including the American Bank Note Company. Returning to Canada in 1912, he settled in Toronto. F.W. Jopling died in Toronto at the age of eighty-five.
